Planet Comicon 2015

VictoriaGe dvillas_Planetcomicon

Planet Comicon was AWESOME! So many cool artists and people at this show, I’m super glad I took my friend’s recommendation to sign up for the artist alley. The show was March 13-15 in Kansas City, and the next one has already been announced for May 20th-22th, 2016. I will be there!

I want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH to those who came by my table and said hello. I’m so honored to have amazing people like the ones above follow me. I wish I could give you all big hugs!! I had so much fun talking to every single one of you, really thank you :3

Juicy Ink was received well, and I picked up a lot of cool commissions that I can’t wait to get started on. I’m truly thankful for the types of commissions that come my way, they are all things I really want to draw. Hint Hint Spider Gwen, Magma, Supergirl and more are on the way!

While I was at Planet Comicon, I participated in a panel discussion title “The business of self-promotion” hosted by Nerd For A Living. Unfortunately Peter J. Wacks was unable to join due to a flight emergency, but we were able to have the wonderful Alexi Vanderberg from WordFire Press to share his eccentric insights. Adron, Alexi and I touched on important topics such as niche markets, social media, personal branding and much more. Thank you to those who came to the panel, your enthusiasm and questions were awesome! For more information about the panel, check out this article.  I highly recommend checking out N4AL’s blog, it’s an excellent collection of information, you will not be disappointed.

I’m still glowing from the awesome experience this weekend. I love attending comic conventions, its an awesome chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

Coming up next is Megacon in Orlando, FL April 10th-12th.

Drawventure March 2015

Woohoo! Today is Drawventure! Get your pens and paper ready, it’s going to be an action packed day. Guidelines are as follows:

  • Identify what you would like to achieve on this adventure
  • Tackle the challenge and draw!
  • Share your progress with the hashtag #DRAWVENTURE

My personal goal for this month is to speed up my process. I’ve been finding myself taking too long on drawings when I know I can do it in half the time. I’m ready to knock this silly nonsense of overthinking mark making and have fun! As always, I encourage participants to cheer on their fellow comrades on this art marathon. Its a lot more fun to make art with those who love to draw and share the same passion. Go ahead, reach out to your teammates. A simple comment goes a long way and can bring so much happiness.

If this is your first Drawventure, I recommend visiting last month’s Drawventure blog post for more inspiration. To those who have participated in Drawventure previously, its great to see you again! Ready to make lots of awesome art? Lets go!

Juicy Ink Kickstarter Update

Lots of excitement lately! It’s been a lot of work getting the book ready for print, but seeing the final product made it all worth it.  Currently, I’m in the middle of finalizing all the rewards and individually packing them with lovely handwritten notes. I can’t wait to ship all the rewards and preorders next Monday. I’m blown away by how many people have preordered the book. It makes me so happy! Below is a preview of the sample book.

The final book turned out AWESOME. My previous handmade sketchbooks were saddle stitched. This time around I envisioned a perfect bound art book. The book is also ten pages longer than originally planned, filled with super secret exclusive pages. It’s amazing to see my development with Copic markers over the past year. In the book there are two versions of the same character, a grown up version of Sailor Mini Moon and the Dark Lady. I love comparing the two and seeing the style choices I made for each.

Exclusive Art Print just for Kickstarter!
Above is the new artwork created just for this Kickstarter. Only twenty were made for those who’s pledges included an art print.

Missed the Kickstarter? Thats ok! You can still preorder the book here. It’ll be shipped with all the others on Monday. After the books are shipped, a pdf version will be available for purchase. Those who did order a physical copy of the book will also receive a one-time use code to download the pdf book.

Drawventure February 2015

Hey everyone! The next Drawventure is this Saturday, February 7th. For those on the other side of the planet, feel free to join in on Sunday! I’ve been looking forward to this day all month!! I absolutely love Drawventure because it’s a whole day devoted to art without any other nagging responsibilities. It’s a time to be selfish and pick at those creative curiosities that accumulate over time.

If you haven’t heard of Drawventure before, I invite you to join me in this monthly art marathon to improve ourselves as artists. The beautiful thing about art is that there is always something to explore and skills to develop. What are your goals as an creative individual? Do you wish to become better at color, anatomy, composition? Join me and many others who also have the same dreams as you to become better artists. Below are simple steps on how to participate!

  1. Create a list of weaknesses you want to work on
  2. Tackle the challenge and draw!
  3. Share your progress with the hashtag #DRAWVENTURE

Right now, think about what challenges you encounter with your art. Be honest with yourself, the first step towards improving is pinpointing your weaknesses. Share your goals with your peers on social media with the hashtag #DRAWVENTURE so we can all support you on your adventure. This month I’ll be exploring a different medium, digital painting! I’m really excited to dive in this medium for the entire day and discover a workflow that works for me.

I encourage everyone to explore #DRAWVENTURE and support your fellow peers. A simple cheerful comment or helpful advice can work wonders on an artist’s development. You might be surprised to see there are a lot of artists that have the same challenges as you. I can’t wait to see everyone’s art work, let’s make this the best Drawventure yet!

It would be super awesome if you could help spread the word about this art marathon and share this photo. To learn more about Drawventure, visit the previous posts with helpful tips and this post where it all started.

Pencil Sketch Process

Recently a subscriber from my YouTube channel requested a video about my pencil sketch process, particularly about what goes into my drawings before I start coloring. Here are some helpful tips and things I keep in mind during the initial sketch stage. Surprisingly enough, the pencil drawing takes up majority of the time I invest in a illustration between all the planning and checking.

The paper I use is Cresent Rendr, and it comes in this super awesome pad. I find drawing on tear-out sheets easier in the book, as I I have a difficult time drawing with a thick spine since it puts my hand in an awkward position. I use the rose color pencil from this Prisma Col-Erase set in majority of my drawings. I love how the color blends with Copics. I really enjoy making these videos for everyone because in return it helps me break down and understand my own process.

The music playing in the background is from one of my favorite albums that I literally play every morning. It’s my favorite way to start the day and you can download it here for free! I hope you enjoy this video and if you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments below :3

A little secret for the super awesome people who are reading this blog post, there will be a part two of Punk Sailor Moon illustration which I started in this video. If you have a question about Copic markers that I didn’t address in my Honey Lemon Copic Demo, I will make sure to answer it in the upcoming video :3
